 Stud cat Housing

Living with stud cats

Our Studs are housed in a heated shed right next to our house. Each cat has a cat wheel, climbing structures, scratching posts, an outdoor enclosure, and a few cozy sleeping options. If you aren't familiar with bengal stud cats, they attract females by peeing and marking their territory, which depending on the stud, can literally be everything in his space. Some just mark, and if you're really lucky, you get one that sprays, which is basically like turning on a urine hose. Their urine gives off a very strong smell, cause they need to attract those girls, and to say the least, it is very strong even for the human nose.  When we got our first stud cat, we were determined to keep him in the house, which worked great till he started spraying and marking at around a year and a Half.  No matter what I did (fans, more fans, candles, opening windows, cleaning, more cleaning, pee pads, more pee pads)  I could not get rid of the urine smell that diffused through our entire house, even with cleaning his area twice a day.  I'd clean it, he'd remark it almost instantly.  Not all boys mark and/or spray, but I would say the majority of the bengal studs do to some extent. There does seem to be a genetic link to bengal stud cats that don't spray, as some breeders have been able to "breed out" the marking and spray behaviors in their stud cats. I have not been fortunate enough to attain one of those boys yet...haha. Soooo, with that all being said, our boys have their own separate housing outside where they can pee and spray and call all day to the girls.  They are happy and so am I.
